Animal rescue groups and shelters work hard to place pets into safe,
loving homes but they can't keep up with the demand and won't be able to until
people take the responsibility to spay and neuter their pets. Unfortunately,
shelters take in hundreds of strays and owner surrendered pets each month and
sadly, some of these have to be humanely euthanized due to severe health issues,
aggression and overpopulation. Charles McDonald, the director of the calhoun
county animal control center prefers to dwell on the success stories of animals
that came into the facility on the brink of death and were nursed back to health
and adopted. "Laws in the state of Alabama is one of our biggest problems",
McDonald said. "They are not stiff enough". Educating the public also plays an
important role in this problem. It is healthier for an animal to be spayed or
neutered. People need better access to low-cost spay and neuter clinics in the
county. An organization named SAVE is working to provide financial help to
families that can't afford the procedures as well as pursuing the possibility of
a low cost clinic in calhoun county. If we all work together, become more
educated on the health and welfare of our pets, and take responsibility, we may
be able to get the overpopulation issues under control.
